13 May 2019 Trench Safety Stand Down
Each year, the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) advocates for a Trench Safety Stand Down week. This year it runs from June 17-21, 2019. NUCA recommends employers take time to directly speak with their employees and others about safety while doing trench and excavation work. The ultimate goal, of course, is to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries that occur every year. You can learn more about Trench Safety Stand Down week by checking the Events tab at the NUCA website – www.nuca.com.
NUCA provides a number of resources to help you with your safety discussions. However, none is more affecting than “Buried Alive: Joe’s Story”, found at the NUCA site: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rUKQxbssMnD4yILuqlu1aW4K_NnCGSKZ/view
This story not only gives you a personal view of the dangers for trench burial, but suggests ways this type of tragedy can be avoided. In June, use Trench Safety Stand Down as an opportunity to review your company’s safety protocols and remind your entire staff of the importance of following those procedures.
